What to actually open
If you already have Remitly installed, use Remitly. On 300 pounds this morning it delivered EGP 20,455.27, for a £0.99 fee. That was about £5.20 ahead of Wise on the same amount. Best regular price on the table today.
If you already have Wise installed and not Remitly, Wise is still a fair choice. Wise gives you the real exchange rate, the one you see if you search “1 GBP to EGP” on Google. The fee is on the screen at £8.51. That is heavier than Wise’s fee on most other routes, and it is what puts Wise second on Egypt today rather than first. But £5.20 behind Remitly on 300 pounds is small money for a familiar app.
If you have neither, install Remitly. On this send size it is the clear pick, and the app is straightforward to set up. Skip Western Union and Xoom on a small Egypt send: the small visible fee hides a wider rate.
Do not open OFX for a send this small. Between the £7 fee and a rate 4.12 percent below the real rate, OFX was £15.77 behind Remitly. OFX is built for much larger sends, where the tighter rate at scale beats the flat fee. On 300 pounds it does not.
Catches
The Remitly first-transfer offer. If you have never used Remitly before, check the app for a first-transfer offer. Remitly’s UK page has been advertising a promotional rate of about 70.18 EGP to 1 GBP, with the fee waived, capped at the first 500 pounds. A 300 pound send falls inside that cap, so the whole amount converts at the promo rate. That would deliver about 21,054 EGP, no fee. Roughly £8.68 ahead of Remitly’s everyday number. Only useful once, and only if the app actually shows you the offer.
The Egyptian pound moves. The rate you are quoted today may not be the rate you are quoted next week. The Egyptian pound has moved a lot in the last two years. That is why the wider-rate apps look worse than usual on Egypt: they are pricing in the risk of the rate moving before your money lands. Wise and Remitly reprice more often, so their rate follows the real one closely.
Delivery time. A bank deposit to Egypt usually lands within the same working day on Remitly and Wise, for a payment funded by bank transfer early in the morning. Exact time depends on the receiving bank and the weekend (banks in Egypt are closed Friday and Saturday, so a Friday send may land Sunday). A five pound difference at the top of the table is not worth losing a fast, familiar route for.
