The Friday Number

The Friday number: £300 to Turkey this week

On £300 to a Turkish lira bank account this Friday morning, three apps arrived within about a pound of each other at the top: Instarem (TRY 19,344.86, zero fee), Remitly (TRY 19,280.76, £1.99 fee) and Wise (TRY 19,276.51, £2.85 fee at the real rate). Open any of them. NatWest, Western Union and Nationwide sat £4 to £20 behind on the same send.

What to actually open

If you already have Instarem installedUse Instarem. On £300 this morning it delivered 19,344.86 lira for a zero fee. That was the best of the fresh prices on the Wise price comparison for Turkey today, by a small margin on the two apps right behind it.

If you have Remitly and not InstaremRemitly is a fair pick.On £300 it delivered 19,280.76 lira after a £1.99 fee, about a pound behind Instarem. Remitly's rate on this route sits very close to the real one, so most of that pound is the fee rather than a hidden gap in the exchange rate.

If Wise is the app you already useWise is a fair pick.On £300 Wise delivered 19,276.51 lira after a £2.85 fee, about a pound behind Instarem. Wise gives you the real exchange rate, the one you see if you search "1 GBP to TRY" on Google. On Turkey this morning that put Wise third by about a pound. The reason is the fee, not the rate.

Do not open your Nationwide app for this.On £300 the Nationwide send delivered 18,078.75 lira, about £19.50 less than Instarem for the same money going to the same lira bank account. Part of it is the £15 transfer fee the bank charges up front; the rest is a rate about 2.2 percent below the real rate. NatWest does not charge the £15 fee, but its rate still sits about 2 percent below the real one, which on £300 is about £6 the bank quietly keeps.

Catches

A few things to check before you send. The table above is a bank deposit into a Turkish lira account. If your family wants the money in a dollar or euro account held with a Turkish bank, the price is a different one. Open the app and check the receiving screen before you send.

Several apps many senders to Turkey reach for did not return a fresh price for GBP to TRY on the Wise price comparison this morning. That group includes Revolut, Starling, Monzo, Chase, Zing, TransferGo, LemFi, Small World and MoneyGram. They are missing from the table today, not judged. If one of them is your usual app, or if your family wants cash pickup at a Western Union counter or a PTT branch, open the app and check the number yourself before you send.

Timing matters on Turkey. Turkey is two hours ahead of the UK while the UK is on summer time, so a Friday morning send from London arrives inside working hours in Istanbul and Ankara. Wise's own delivery estimate on this route this morning was within the hour. Several of the bank rows on the Wise price comparison for Turkey were last pulled on Monday, so the live price on your bank's app may differ by the time you open it.
