What to actually open

If you already have Wise installedUse Wise.On £300 this morning it delivered €353.33 for a £1.51 fee at the real exchange rate, the one you see if you search "1 GBP to EUR" on Google. That was the best of the fresh prices on the Wise price comparison for Lithuania today, €0.21 ahead of Instarem and about €6 ahead of the next bank.

If you do not have Wise and already use InstaremInstarem is a fair pick.On £300 Instarem delivered €353.12 for a zero fee, €0.21 behind Wise. The rate sits about 0.55 percent below the real one, which on £300 is under £2 the app quietly keeps. The gap to Wise is small enough that for most senders the arrival is the same.

If you reach for Skrill because it advertises no feeKnow what you are paying. On £300 to Lithuania Skrill's rate sits about 5 percent below the real one, which is about £14 the app keeps in the exchange. Part of it is the £15 transfer fee the bank charges up front; the rest is a rate about 2.2 percent below the real rate. Catches

A few things to check before you send. Two apps that UK-based Lithuanian senders reach for first are Revolut and TransferGo, both with Lithuanian founders. Neither returned a fresh price for GBP to EUR to Lithuania on the Wise price comparison this morning. They are missing from the table above, not judged. If one of them is your usual app, open it and check the arrival for £300 on the receiving screen before you send.

HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds and Santander UK did not return a fresh row either, so they are absent from the Lithuania feed this morning. If your sterling account is at one of them, open the app and check the number yourself. Expect a rate somewhere near NatWest's and a transfer fee that varies by bank.

Delivery to a Lithuanian euro account normally arrives the same morning on a weekday. A Friday evening send from a UK bank often does not clear until Monday morning. If the money is for a rent or school payment due Monday, send on Thursday or early Friday to be safe.
